Coloring methods for zirconia ceramic blocks and dentures
With the increasing demand for aesthetically pleasing dentures, color has become one of the most important performance indicators for zirconia dentures. In the denture fabrication process, recognizing, comparing, and precisely matching colors are crucial. The accuracy and stability of the color in zirconia dentures are primarily determined by the zirconia ceramic blocks.
There are three main methods for achieving the color of zirconia ceramic blocks and dentures: Current status and advantages/disadvantages of various zirconia ceramic block/denture color achievement methods.
- White zirconia ceramic block + soaking/brushing with staining solution
White zirconia ceramic block + soaking/brushing with staining solution is a classic method for coloring zirconia dentures. The main process is: milling the white zirconia ceramic block into a crown → applying/soaking with a staining solution of the corresponding color number → drying → high-temperature sintering.
The main components of staining solutions are as follows: Staining solutions can be categorized by their application as follows:
(1) Staining solutions: including VITA-16 and VITA-26, used to achieve the main color of teeth;
(2) Incisional staining solutions: used to adjust the translucency of the incisal edges of dentures;
(3) Posterior staining solutions: used to adjust the color depth of missing denture parts;
(4) Special staining solutions: including gingival staining, fissure staining, and cervical staining, used for special staining of corresponding positions on dentures. The method of achieving color using white zirconia ceramic blocks by soaking/brushing with dyeing solution has the following disadvantages:
(1) Cumbersome process: It requires multiple steps such as cleaning, soaking/brushing, drying, and sintering. Each step has strict requirements on time, temperature, and tool selection (such as No. 6 ceramic brush and infrared drying lamp);
(2) Strict pollution control requirements: Dyeing must be carried out in a dust-free and dry environment, and protective equipment (such as gloves and goggles) must be worn. Improper operation can easily introduce pollution (such as hand sweat and oil stains), leading to problems such as white spots and yellow spots;
(3) Poor stability of dyeing solution: Due to the large amount of pollutants in the dyeing solution... (3) The stability of the liquid is poor, and the color and uniformity of the dyeing solution will change after a long period of use;
(4) The transportation of the dyeing solution is cumbersome: Liquid transportation is relatively cumbersome, especially international and air transport, and the safety inspection of the dyeing solution is very strict;
(5) The color stability of the dyeing solution is poor: Fluctuations in the density of the zirconia ceramic block green body, improper dyeing solution formula, soaking time, and furnace temperature control can easily lead to a reddish/yellowish/grayish color or insufficient transparency;
(6) The waste liquid treatment is cumbersome: The waste liquid of the dyeing solution contains metal ions and must be treated by special wastewater purification technology before it can be discharged.
- Pre-dyed single-layer colored zirconia + coating the cut end solution
Because the white zirconia dyeing process is complex and the dyeing solution is an organic liquid with unstable color, the dyeing effect is not very good. Therefore, colored zirconia has emerged in the market. Pre-stained single-layer colored zirconia ceramic blocks (referred to as "colored zirconia") are an upgraded version of white zirconia ceramic blocks. They possess inherent color, avoiding the influence of factors such as staining solution formulation, ambient temperature, and human operation during the staining process of white zirconia. This further prevents fluctuations in the staining effect and overall aesthetics of dentures, as well as color mismatches.
Internal coloring of the material, with colorant added before sintering: Metal oxide pigments (such as iron oxide, yttrium oxide, praseodymium oxide, etc.) are incorporated into Zirconia Powder (mainly ZrO₂). High-temperature sintering allows the pigments to be evenly distributed within the ceramic, forming the inherent color.
The color-achieving method of pre-stained single-layer colored zirconia ceramic blocks + application of staining solution has the following advantages and disadvantages:
- Pre-stained multi-layer gradient colored zirconia ceramic blocks (no staining required)
Although pre-stained single-layer colored zirconia ceramic blocks can avoid the defects caused by staining solutions, they still cannot achieve a natural tooth effect, resulting in poor aesthetics for dentures.
