Neodymium Oxide (Nd2O3) Description
a) An oxide of a rare earth element. It is soluble in acid and insoluble in water.
b) Neodymium(III) oxide or neodymium sesquioxide is the chemical compound composed of neodymium and oxygen with the formula Nd2O3. It forms hygroscopic blue hexagonal crystals. The rare earth mixture didymium, previously believed to be an element, partially consists of neodymium(III) oxide.

Purpose

Neodymium oxide is used in the production of metallic neodymium, neodymium iron boron permanent magnetic materials, coloring of glass and ceramic materials, additives for rubber products and laser materials

Neodymium Oxide (Nd2O3) Typical Applications

a) Used in ceramic capacitors, color TV tubes, high temperature glazes, coloring glass, carbon-arc-light electrodes, and vacuum deposition.
b) Neodymium(III) oxide is used to dope glass, including sunglasses, make solid-state lasers, and to color glasses and enamels. Neodymium-doped glass turns purple due to the absorbance of yellow and green light, and is used in welding goggles. Some neodymium-doped glass is dichroic; that is, it changes color depending on the lighting. One kind of glass named for the mineral alexandrite appears blue in sunlight and red in artificial light.
c) Approx. 7,000 tonnes of neodymium(III) oxide are produced worldwide each year.
d) Neodymium(III) oxide is also used as a polymerization catalyst.

Application

1. Neodymium oxide is mainly used as a colorant for glass and ceramics, raw materials for making metal neodymium and strong magnetic neodymium iron boron. Adding 1.5% to 2.5% nano-neodymium oxide to magnesium alloy or aluminum alloy can improve the high temperature performance of the alloy. , air tightness and corrosion resistance, widely used as aerospace materials.
2. Nanometer yttrium aluminum garnet doped with nanometer neodymium oxide produces short-wave laser beam, which is widely used in welding and cutting of thin materials with thickness below 10mm in industry.
3. In medical treatment, nanometer yttrium aluminum garnet laser doped with nanometer neodymium oxide can be used to remove surgical or sterilize wounds instead of scalpel.
4. Nano neodymium oxide is also used in the coloring of glass and ceramic materials as well as rubber products and additives.
