Gadolinium(III) oxide, also known as gadolinium trioxide, is an inorganic chemical product with a Molecular formula of Gd2O3 and a molecular weight of 362.4982. White amorphous powder. It has monoclinic and cubic structure of rare earth Sesquioxide. Di5 7.407; Melting point 2339 ℃; Boiling point 3900 ℃. Insoluble in water, soluble in organic acids, and able to easily absorb water and carbon dioxide in the air. When reacting with ammonia, precipitates a hydrate of gadolinium.

Storage method

Inhalation of gadolinium containing dust can lead to occupational pneumoconiosis. Staff should take proper precautions. Store in a well ventilated and dry place. Attention should be paid to moisture prevention to prevent packaging damage. 

Main purpose

In the glass industry, Gadolinium(III) oxide is specially used as a component of high refractive index glass. Gadolinium(III) oxide is used together with lanthanum to help change the vitrification zone and improve the thermal stability of the glass. Nuclear industry is used for Control rod of nuclear reactors, neutron absorbing materials in atomic reactors, magnetic bubble materials, intensifying screen materials, etc. Gadolinium(III) oxide can also be used to manufacture capacitors, X-ray intensifying screens and gadolinium gallium garnet materials.

Application

Gadolinium Oxide, also called Gadolinia, is used for making optical glass and Gadolinium Yttrium Garnets which have microwave applications. High purity of Gadolinium Oxide is used for making phosphors for colour TV tube. Cerium Oxide (in the form of Gadolinium doped ceria) creates an electrolyte with both high ionic conductivity and low operating temperatures that are optimal for cost-effective production of fuel cells. It is one of the most commonly available forms of the rare earth element Gadolinium, derivatives of which are potential contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging.
Gadolinium oxide Gd2O3 is used as YAG YIG yttrium aluminum and yttrium iron garnet doping agent, sensitized fluorescent material in medical equipment, nuclear reactor control material, raw material for the preparation of metal gadolinium, magnetic bubble material and optical prism additive.
